Water Quality - Why Is My Stream Impaired

Water Quality

Why is my stream Impaired?

Waterbodies in North Carolina are listed as Impaired (category 4 or 5) based on the results of water quality sampling.  The Assessment Methodology for how the samples are interperated and given a category on the Integrated Report (or 303(d) List) explains the general  process in depth.  There are two main ways to find stream specific information...

Find Stream on Integrated Report / 303(d) List

For basic information on the streams status (eg: Supporting, Impaired), you can go to the Water Quality Data Assessment page.  On the right, you will find tabs with years of each Integrated Report.  Click on the year, then on the report desired.

How to search these reports:

  • If you have the stream name or the Assessment Unit Number (AU#), use Ctrl + F to search the document.

  • You can also search by Basin, Subbasin (8-digit), Watershed (10-digit), and/or Subwatershed (12-digit) names

What is the difference between the Integrated Report and the 303(d) List

  • The Integrated Report includes all monitored streams in North Carloina

  • The 303(d) List includes only impaired waters (category 4 & 5)

    • The 2012 303(d) list does not include category 4; however, category 4 are still considered impaired

Finding Streams in a Basinwide Water Quality Plan

For much more in-depth information about a particular stream, you can go to the Basinwide Water Quality Plan.  From the Basinwide Planning Unit home page, click  the basin you are in on the map, then the latest plan link.
