Nutrient Offset Practices

The predominant practice used by those seeking to generate nutrient reduction credits for sale is the establishment of riparian forested buffers where none exists. The Division awards such practices a nutrient reduction benefit of 75.7 lbs/yr nitrogen and 4.88 lbs/yr phosphorus.

Other practices are eligible to generate nutrient reduction credit for sale (e.g., stormwater ponds). To date, however, these have not been as cost-effective as buffer restoration.

All generators of nutrient credits need to coordinate with the Division to obtain the proper approvals for their nutrient banks prior to providing nutrient credits for sale under state rules. For questions regarding the establishment of private banks, please contact: Katie Merritt, Nutrient Offset Banking Coordinator, (919) 807-6371, Katie.Merritt@ncdenr.gov
