Chemistry Laboratory Employee Profiles

Employees of the Water Sciences Section's Chemistry Laboratory strive to provide exceptional service to both internal and external clients. Take a look at what some of our staff are doing.

Roy Byrd - 2013 DWR Employee of the Year

At the DWR Employee Recognition and Awards Luncheon, Roy Byrd was presented the Division's Employee of the Year award for 2013 by DENR Secretary Skyvarla. Roy has many years of experience in chemical analysis of environmental samples, and extensive knowledge of metals analysis. He is always ready to share his expertise with division staff and other outside customers, as well as support the laboratory staff in day-to-day operations. Congratulations, Roy!

Todd Crawford - 2011 Outstanding Employee

Mr. Todd Crawford was voted by his peers as the Chemistry Laboratory's 2011 Outstanding Employee. Todd is an Auditor in the Laboratory Certification program and while he is a little camera shy, we are very proud of him. His nomination read:

This nomination recognizes the outstanding accomplishments of Mr. Todd Crawford.  The economic downturn has presented unprecedented budget challenges to state government agencies and, although the NC WW/GW LC program is fully funded by receipts, laboratory certification is not exempt. The certification unit lost one position and currently has three vacancies. With over 700 certified laboratories in the program, meeting mandated responsibilities has become quite a challenge. We are grateful that Todd is quick to recognize areas of need and takes unsolicited action to fill in those gaps. He accepted the responsibility of an additional region assignment and has effectively managed both the Washington and Wilmington areas, consisting of almost 200 laboratories (50 labs is considered an ideal number per auditor) and continues to perform his regular responsibilities at an outstanding level.

Todd has also effectively managed and advanced the Chlorophyll a Round Robin testing program. He coordinates participation of certified and academic laboratories, the collection and distribution of samples, compilation of demographic data and analytical results, consultation with Division representatives, report generation and corrective action oversight. This annual project is in addition to his assigned responsibilities as a Laboratory Certification auditor.
