Groundwater Investigation Unit

The Groundwater Investigation Unit (GWIU) supports the Division’s efforts to assess water quality impacts of human activities and to implement effective planning and monitoring programs. The GWIU is involved from start to finish at the Aquifer Protection Section's ambient water quality monitoring stations and for special investigations of permitted facilities and contaminated sites. The GWIU provides technical expertise on drilling techniques, well locations, and construction details during the planning stages of investigations, performs well construction and soil and rock sample collection during development of water quality investigations, and provides logistical support for water quality monitoring and aquifer testing, and performs well repair and abandonment.

The Groundwater Investigation Unit’s wide range of in-house drilling capabilities often attracts other agencies and institutions to collaborate with DWQ, including USGS, state universities, and other parts of DENR. DWQ has established formal guidelines  for collaborative projects in order to attract collaborators and direct potential collaborators towards DWQ’s interests in water quality monitoring and protection.  The budget adopted for teh 2011-2012 fiscal year also requires DWQ's Groundwater Investigation Unit to bid on drilling work needed by other divisions of DENR.
