If you have been designated as a Primary Operator for a NC UST facility, you need to register for a training course. You can be an employee of the UST owner or operator.
Third-party contractors or testing companies are NOT able to serve as primary operators.
For more information visit the operator training page.
There are two options for obtaining Primary Operator training for NC facilities.
Option 1: Attend NC Tank School, receive hands-on training by UST staff in both federal and NC requirements, pass an exam, and become a certified Primary Operator. There is NO cost for this option.
Option 2: Complete an online class, receive training in federal requirements only, pass an online exam, and become a certified Primary Operator. Private companies charge a FEE for this option.
As an alternative to attending one of the above Operator Training classes provided by NC DENR, you can go to one of the following companies that offer on-line Operator Training courses approved by North Carolina. The on-line training meets the minimum federal operator training requirements but does not provide training on any of the UST compliance requirements that are specific to North Carolina. The on-line courses typically have a registration fee that you will have to pay prior to taking the class.
Whichever company you choose, you MUST include your facility ID #, which can be found on your permit and has the following format: ##-#-00000#####.
