Sustainable Communities Federal Awards 2011

U.S HUD, U.S. DOT, U.S. EPA logosThe U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced the recipients of the 2011 Sustainable Communities Grants, totaling nearly $96 million. Twenty-seven communities and organizations across the country received Community Challenge grants and 29 regional areas received Regional Planning grants. The goal of the grants is to help communities and regions improve their economic competitiveness by connecting housing with good jobs, quality schools and transportation.

North Carolina received one community challenge grant and two regional planning grants. The Community  Challenge Grant recipient was the city of High Point. The regional planning grants were awarded to the Cape Fear Council of Governments and the Centralina Council of Governments. The award to the Centralina COG was the third largest in the nation.
