About the Mountain Resources Commission

  • The Mountain Resources Commission was created to provide tools for local governments to enhance and sustain our natural and economic assets to ensure the long term health of this region and our people.
  • The Commission has absolutely no regulatory authority; it is strictly an advisory body.
  • Members receive no compensation for their work or travel expenses. Bi-monthly meetings of the Commission are hosted by local governments throughout the region and are open to the public.
  • The 17 members are appointed by the House, Senate, Governor and regional councils in the western region. The MRC continues to provide a forum for collaboration and civility among members with diverse interests and backgrounds. No other publicly-appointed entity like it exists in the western region.
  • The MRC works with a 13-member advisory council composed of members representing universities, nonprofits, government agencies and private business.

Enabling Legislation

During the 2009 legislative session, the General Assembly established the Mountain Resources Commission in Chapter 153B: Mountain Resources Planning Act to encourage quality growth and development while preserving the natural resources, open spaces and farmland of the mountain region of Western North Carolina. This was signed into law by Governor Perdue on Aug. 26, 2009.

Mountain Resources Commission Goals

The MRC annually reviews its goals and objectives for the coming year and amends them as necessary. The goals listed here were originally approved in 2010. The current goals which were approved in August 2012 are posted here.
