PROCLAMATION
RE: RESEARCH SANCTUARY
Dr. Louis B. Daniell III, Director, Division of Marine Fisheries, hereby announces that effective at 12:00 P.M., Monday, July 23, 2012, the following area is declared a RESEARCH SANCTUARY and is closed to shellfishing:
I. AREA DESCRIPTION
NEW HANOVER COUNTY
In Hewletts Creek on the west side of the ICW across from Masonboro Island, and north of Carolina Beach Inlet. The area is approximately 20.7 acres in size and is delineated by pilings and signs as shown on the attached map. The location of the pilings are as follows:
Piling 1 34° 10.720'N 77° 50.624'W
Piling 2 34° 10.698'N 77° 50.591'W
Piling 3 34° 10.685'N 77° 50.565'W
Piling 4 34° 10.666'N 77° 50.516'W
Piling 5 34° 10.596'N 77° 50.479'W
Piling 6 34° 10.559'N 77° 50.469'W
Piling 7 34° 10.490'N 77° 50.505'W
Piling 8 34° 10.517'N 77° 50.578'W
Piling 9 34° 10.640'N 77° 50.655'W
Piling 10 34° 10.531'N 77° 50.620'W
II. GENERAL INFORMATION
A. This proclamation is issued under the authority of G.S. 113-170.4; 113-170.5; 113-182; 113-221; 143B-289.52; and N.C. Marine Fisheries Rules 15A NCAC 03H .0103 and 03I .0109.
B. It is unlawful to violate provisions of any proclamation issued by the Fisheries Director under his delegated authority per 15A NCAC 03H .0103.
C. This area will be used by the UNC-Wilmington Center for Marine Science to conduct research on shellfish biology, oyster growth and survival.
D. N.C. Marine Fisheries Rule 15A NCAC 03I .0109, specifies that these Research Sanctuaries are in effect for one year, subject to renewal at the end of that year.
