FF-34-2012 PROCLAMATION RE: PELAGIC SHARKS-PORBEAGLE Dr. Louis B. Daniel, III, Director, Division of Marine Fisheries, hereby announces that effective at 11:30 P.M. Wednesday, May 30, 2012, the following restrictions will apply to the commercial harvest of pelagic sharks: I. SEASON The commercial fishing season for porbeagle sharks in all state waters will close. The remainder of the pelagic shark species group will remain open. This group includes shortfin mako, common thresher, oceanic whitetip, and blue sharks. II. GENERAL INFORMATION A. This proclamation is issued under the authority of N.C.G.S. 113-170.4; 113-170.5; 113-134; 113-181; 113-182; 113-221.1; 143B-289.52 and N.C. Marine Fisheries Rules 15A NCAC 03H .0103 and 03M .0512. B. It is unlawful to violate the provisions of any proclamation issued by the Fisheries Director under his delegated authority pursuant to Marine Fisheries Rule 15A NCAC 03H .0103. C. The pelagic species group is exempt from harvest and size restrictions. D. The intent of this proclamation is to close the porbeagle shark fishery in state waters due to the commercial quota established by the National Marine Fisheries Service having been reached. E. This proclamation supersedes the portion of FF-85-2011, dated December 20, 2011 that pertains to porbeagle sharks. May 25, 2012
