MEDIA ADVISORY:
Marine Fisheries Commission to meet May 15-17 in Jacksonville

8-point rule

MOREHEAD CITY – The North Carolina Marine Fisheries Commission will meet May 15-17 at the Courtyard by Marriott, 5046 Henderson Drive, Jacksonville.

The meeting will begin at 6 p.m. May 15, at 9 a.m. May 16, and at 9 a.m. May 17.

Public comment periods will be held at 6 p.m. May 15 and 9:45 a.m. May 16. Members of the public may speak to the commission on any fisheries-related topic. The chairman will allow each speaker to comment for three minutes. More time may be allotted, at the chairman’s discretion, depending on the number who sign up to speak. Those making comments will be asked to speak only once, either at the May 15 or the May 16 session, but not during both public comment periods.

The deadline for submitting written comments to the commission, including email, through the Marine Fisheries Commission Office, is noon May 13. Those who wish to forego this process and give handouts to the commission during the public comment period should bring at least 12 copies of the handout.

The public may listen to the meeting on the Internet. Up to 200 participants may listen to audio and view presentations in real-time on a first-come, first-served basis. Directions for participating in the webcast, including information on system requirements and testing, can be found here.

Following the meeting, an audio recording will be posted online.

The commission is scheduled to vote to send draft Amendment 2 to the Southern Flounder Fishery Management Plan out for public comment and advisory committee review. The draft amendment calls for a reduction in southern flounder harvest to be achieved through season closures for the commercial and recreational sectors and consideration of yardage and time restrictions for gill nets and daily harvests limits for pound nets and gigs. The proposed commercial seasons are by areas – Northern, Central, and Southern.

If approved, the public comment period for the draft amendment will likely begin the week following the commission meeting and include a public meeting for comment on the afternoon of June 3 at the Civic Center in Morehead City. The commission is scheduled to hold a special meeting on the issue in June and then give final approval of the draft amendment in August so that the management measures can be implemented this fall.

A full meeting agenda and briefing book materials are posted online here.
