Marine Fisheries Commission Slated to Meet in Atlantic Beach
MOREHEAD CITY — The N.C. Marine Fisheries Commission will meet May 9-11 at the Clam Digger Inn, 511 Salter Path Road, Atlantic Beach.
The meeting is open to the public.
The commission will hear a presentation on the 2011 Landings Report, which will be released at the meeting. The N.C. Division of Marine Fisheries compiles statistical data on commercial and recreational catches. The presentation will also give an overview of trends in commercial and recreational landings since 1994.
The commission also will discuss the state’s application for an incidental take permit for Atlantic sturgeon. These permits, authorized under Section 10 of the Endangered Species Act, allow for takes of endangered species that occur incidentally to an otherwise lawful activity under limitations specified in each permit. The N.C. Division of Marine Fisheries submitted an incidental take permit application April 5. The National Marine Fisheries Service listed Atlantic sturgeon as an endangered species April 6.
The meeting begins with a public comment session at 6 p.m. May 9. Anyone who wishes to speak to the commission on a fisheries-related matter may do so then or at the start of the business meeting May 10.
The chairman will allow each commenter to speak for five minutes during the May 9 session and three minutes during the May 10 session. Due to time constraints, those making comments will be asked to speak only once, either at the May 9 or May 10 sessions. Individuals will not be allowed to speak during both public comment periods.
The business sessions of the meeting begin at 9 a.m. May 10 and 8:30 a.m. May 11.
The meeting agenda is attached. The full briefing book can be found on the N.C. Division of Marine Fisheries website at http://portal.ncdenr.org/web/mf/mfc-agendas-briefingbooks-presentations.
