N.C. Marine Fisheries Commission Advisory Committees

Advisory committees (AC) assist the Marine Fisheries Commission (MFC) in the performance of its duties by making recommendations on management issues. The Regional and Standing committees are required by statute and session law (references). The MFC chairman also convenes committees to assist in the development of fishery management plans, and to deal with emerging issues as the commission deems necessary.

Advisers are appointed by the MFC chairman. Members of regional and standing committees serve three-year terms.  Members serving on subject matter committees, including fishery management plan committees, serve until the charge of the committee is completed.

To be qualified to serve on a committee, you may not have had a significant fisheries violation within the past three years.  Also, to serve on a regional committee you must reside in that region.
Northern: Areas from the Virginia line south through Hyde and Pamlico counties and any counties to the West
Southern: Areas from Carteret County south to the South Carolina line and any counties to the West
AC meetings are typically two to three hours and scheduled once a quarter, sometimes more frequently according to the assignments from the MFC.  Fishery management plan committees often meet once or twice a month.
