Public hearing scheduled for proposed
Pender County shellfish leases

MOREHEAD CITY — The N.C. Division of Marine Fisheries will hold a public hearing on proposed shellfish leases in Pender County at 6 p.m. Aug. 31 at Surf City Visitor’s Center, 102 North Shore Drive, Surf City.

Samuel J. Corbett of Hampstead has applied to lease 1.14 acres of shellfish bottom near Topsail Sound.

Thomas Hubard of Wilmington has applied to lease 0.6 acres of shellfish bottom and water column in Topsail Sound.

John Stratton Lobdell of Hampstead has applied to lease 1.31 acres of shellfish bottom near Old Topsail Creek.

Maps of the proposed leases, with the corresponding lease numbers, can be seen here.

The public may comment on the proposed leases at the meeting or in writing. Written comments will be accepted until 5 p.m. Aug. 30 and should be submitted to the N.C. Division of Marine Fisheries, Shellfish Leases, P.O. Box 769, Morehead City, N.C. 28557.

The application file and biologist report for the proposed leases are available for inspection weekdays between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. at the N.C. Division of Marine Fisheries’ Headquarters Office at 3441 Arendell St. in Morehead City.

Public hearing scheduled on proposed
shellfish leases in Carteret County

MOREHEAD CITY — The N.C. Division of Marine Fisheries will hold a public hearing on multiple proposed shellfish leases in Carteret County at 6 p.m. Aug. 29 at the N.C. Division of Marine Fisheries’ Central District Office, 5285 U.S.70 West, Morehead City.

Sandbar Oyster Company (David Cessna, agent) has applied to lease 0.56 acres of shellfish bottom lease near North River Marsh and 0.7 acres of shellfish bottom in North River Marsh.

Dallas D. Goodwin of Morehead City has applied to lease 1.65 acres of shellfish bottom and water column near Cedar Island Bay.

Jarrett Bay Oyster Company (Kolby L. Martin, agent) has applied to lease 3.27 acres of shellfish bottom and water column near Core Sound.

Samuel G. Boyd of Morehead City has applied to lease 4.69 acres of shellfish bottom and water column near Bogue Sound.

James A. Morris of Sea Level has applied to lease 2.64 acres of water column on existing shellfish bottom lease No. 9510; 1.89 acres of water column on existing shellfish bottom lease No. 9509 near Core Sound, Nelson Bay; and 2.57 acres of water column on existing shellfish bottom lease No. 9108, near Core Sound, Nelson Bay.

N.C. Marine Fisheries Commission to meet Aug. 16-17 in Raleigh

MOREHEAD CITY — The North Carolina Marine Fisheries Commission will meet Aug. 16-17 at the Doubletree by Hilton Hotel Raleigh – Brownstone – University, 1707 Hillsborough St., Raleigh.

The meeting will begin at 2 p.m. Aug. 16 and 8:30 a.m. Aug. 17.

A public comment period will be held at 6 p.m. Aug. 16. Members of the public may speak to the commission on any fisheries-related topic. The chairman will allow each speaker to comment for up to three minutes. No other public comment period is slated for this meeting.
 
The deadline for submitting written comments to the commission, including email, through the Marine Fisheries Commission Office, is noon Aug. 14. Those who wish to forego this process and give handouts to the commission during the public comment period should bring at least 12 copies of the handout.

The commission is slated to receive presentations on 2016 commercial and recreational landings, as well as the annual stock status overview.

The commission is also scheduled to set the cap of the number of new commercial fishing licenses available in an eligibility pool for 2018 and vote on a five-year schedule for fishery management plan reviews.

The public may listen to the meeting on the Internet. Up to 200 participants may listen to audio and view presentations in real-time on a first-come, first-served basis. Directions for participating in the webcast, including information on system requirements and testing, can be found here. Following the meeting, an audio recording will be posted online.
