Commercial Harvest for Greater Amberjack in South Atlantic Waters
Will Close on January 21, 2016

The commercial harvest for greater amberjack in South Atlantic waters will close, at 12:01 a.m. (local time) January 21, 2016, and will reopen at 12:01 a.m. (local time) on March 1, 2016. The 2016 commercial quota for greater amberjack is 769,388 pounds gutted weight. Updated landings data indicate the commercial quota will be met by January 21, 2016.

The operator of a vessel that has been issued a federal commercial permit for snapper-grouper and is landing greater amberjack for sale must have landed and bartered, traded, or sold such greater amberjack prior to 12:01 a.m., local time, January 21, 2016.

During the commercial closure, sale or purchase of greater amberjack is prohibited.

  • The closure applies in both state and federal waters for vessels, which have a federal commercial permit for South Atlantic Snapper-Grouper.
  • Harvest or possession of greater amberjack is limited to the recreational bag and possession limits.
  • The prohibition on sale or purchase does not apply to the sale or purchase of greater amberjack that were harvested, landed ashore, and sold prior to 12:01 a.m., local time, January 21, 2016, and were held in cold storage by a dealer or processor.
  • This closure is necessary to protect the snapper-grouper resource.

Marine Fisheries Artificial Reef Program to hold public meeting
on Dare County reef sites

MOREHEAD CITY — The N.C. Division of Marine Fisheries’ Artificial Reef Program will hold a public meeting at 6 p.m. Feb. 8 in Room 168 of the Dare County Administrative Building, 954 Marshall C. Collins Drive, Manteo.

The purpose of the meeting is to inform the public of enhancement plans for four artificial reefs near Oregon Inlet: AR-130, AR-140, AR-145 and AR-160 (Oregon Inlet Reef). The Division of Marine Fisheries is working with the N.C. Department of Transportation to receive demolition materials from the Bonner Bridge replacement project. Those materials will be distributed among these reefs. Bridge demolition is expected to begin in the fall of 2018.

Marine Fisheries Commission seeks advisers for
Northern Regional Advisory Committee

MOREHEAD CITY — The N.C. Marine Fisheries Commission is still looking for commercial and recreational fishermen and scientists to serve on the Northern Regional Advisory Committee.

The committee advises the commission on various fisheries issue referred to it by the commission, such as draft fishery management plans, and recommends management strategies. The committee may also bring issues pertaining to the region or subject matter to the commission’s attention.

The Marine Fisheries Commission chairman appoints members to the committee for three-year terms.

To be qualified to serve on a committee, applicants may not have had a significant fisheries violation within the past three years.

Individuals interested in serving as an adviser should be willing to attend meetings at least once every two months and actively participate in the committee process, which includes reviewing scientific documents and papers summarizing issues to make recommendations on management strategies. Advisers will be reimbursed for travel and other expenses incurred in relation to their official duties.
