Crushed stone (aggregate)Products

This sizing and wash plant make different crushed stone shipping products based on size.  The crushed stone is sold FOB at the mine site and is loaded on commercial dump trucks for transport to areas where road material or concrete is being made.

A typical crushed stone operation produces more than one type of product depending on demand. The product mix changes daily depending on demand.

A complex series of crushing, screening and washing steps in a sizing plant (left) are used to produce different rock sizes.

Five main products are produced. They are:

  • ABC - aggregate base course. This is used as a base layer in road construction. This material is generally less than 1.5 inches in size;
  • 78M - This material, generally about 3/8 inch in size, is used for asphalt;
  • 67 or 57 - This material is about 1/2 inch in size. It is used for concrete and asphalt;
  • #5 stone - This is used for septic fields; the size of this material is from 3/4 inch to 1 inch; and
  • Rip rap - used for erosion control.

The following (below) shows the different rock products that are produced in a typical crushed stone operation such as this. The ruler units are centimeters (top contrasting bars) and inches (lower contrasting bands). Note that some products are washed to improve product strength and to minimize chemical reactions that would decrease concrete or asphalt strength.

Think of how many items in your home are made from crushed rock. For example the concrete in the sidewalk (2), and the asphalt in the driveway (not numbered), as well as the home's foundation. The car is driven on asphalt and concrete highways. How many other examples can you think of for the use of crushed stone in your home?
