Reid, Jeffrey C., and Medina, Michael A., 2000. Mines and prospects in Cabarrus, Gaston, Lincoln, Mecklenburg, Stanly, and Union counties, North Carolina. Open-file reports 2000-2 through 2000-7. North Carolina Geological Survey: Raleigh. Price: $15.00 (CD-ROM containing all reports)

This CD-ROM contains data about mines and prospects in Cabarrus, Gaston, Lincoln, Mecklenburg, Stanly, and Union counties, North Carolina. These maps of known mine locations in the six North Carolina counties were prepared as a planning aid for local governments and private citizens.

Publication of the maps and data was prompted by subsidence over abandoned underground workings at the Phoenix Gold Mine, Cabarrus County, North Carolina during February 2000 (Wooten and Clark, in preparation). Subsidence is the sudden or gradual downward movement of the ground surface.  It can be rapid as in the case of the Phoenix Mine, where the ground collapsed over a period of less than two hours. Subsidence can also be slow, with the ground surface dropping by a few inches over a number of years.

The greatest potential for subsidence exists over abandoned underground mine workings such as tunnels and shafts. Underground workings most likely occur at gold-related (precious metal).  In some cases, the tunnels and shafts may extend for hundreds of feet underground.  Damage to buildings and other structures can occur if they are located above underground workings without taking this into account during design and construction.  As a matter of public safety, areas of suspected underground workings or subsidence should be avoided.

Mining for gold and other precious metals occurred in 18th and 19th centuries at hundreds of locations in North Carolina, and into the early 20th century at some localities. Although relatively rare, the potential for damaging subsidence will increase as urban growth spreads into once sparsely populated areas where underground mining occurred.   Public awareness, zoning and building permit requirements can help reduce the risk of damaging subsidence or injury.
