Due to changes in base line procedures all of the marks were not used in the recalibration of the line in 1980. There was no original description. The 1980 description is as follows.

 

The base line is located about 3 miles south of Rockingham, 3 miles west of Hamlet and along the southwest edge of the main airstrip at the Rockingham- Hamlet airstrip at the Rockingham-Hamlet airport.

 

The 0 meter point is near the southeast corner of the airport about 1000 meters southeast of the terminal building, 58.3 meters southwest of the southwest edge of the runway, 51 meters southeast of a long metal runway marker, 6.62 meters north of a 4 inch square concrete witness post and 6.385 meters northwest of a fence corner in the 4 foot high chain link boundary fence.

 

The 0 meter and 1389 meter marks are 1 inch round hollow plugs with screw caps set in a 8.5 inch square metal plate set in the top of a 12 foot long, 18 inch round corrugated pipe filled with concrete and projecting about 4 feet above the surface. All the other marks are plain 3 inch round nipple top brass caps set in the top of 8 inch round concrete monuments that are flush with the surface except for the 150 meter point which is recessed into the concrete about 2 inches. All of the marks are stamped with R- and their base line designation. Each mark has a 4 inch square concrete witness post set near the tree line on the southwest side of the airport.

 

The base line is a northwest-southeast line with the 0 meter point on the southeast end. It is made up of 0, 150, 463 and 1389 meter points. 0 to 50 and 0 to 926 meter points were measured but not tied into the other marks.

 

In order to make measurements from the 0 and 1389 meter points, special tribrachs are needed. Rice International has these special tribrachs which fit into the plugs and make it possible to set instruments and reflectors on the end points.

Additional reference information follows: The 150 meter mark is 10.0 meters(33.0 feet) northwest of a witness post, 15.5 meters (51.0 feet) west-northwest of a longleaf pine with reference tag and 57.7 meters (189.2 feet) southwest of the south edge of the runway.

 

The 463 meter mark is 11.6 meters (38.1 feet) northwest of a witness post, 55.9 meters (183.3 feet) southwest of the south edge of the runway and 71.5 meters (234.6 feet) northeast of the east end of a metal visual approach indicator.

 THE BASE LINE IS LOCATED ABOUT 7.4 KM (4.6 MI) SOUTH OF WHITEVILLE AT THE COLUMBUS COUNTY MUNICIPAL AIRPORT, 11.6 KM (7.2 MI)
 EAST-SOUTHEAST OF CHADBOURN, AND 20.1 KM (12.5 MI) NORTHEAST OF TABOR CITY.

 THE BASE LINE IS A SOUTHWEST-NORTHEAST LINE WITH THE 0 METER POINT ON THE SOUTHWEST END.  THE BASE LINE CONSISTS OF THE 000, 150,
