Geodetic surveys have evolved through the years to the use of survey-grade (centimeter level) global

positioning to perpetuate and post-process vertical datum. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) uses

Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) technology to monitor natural hazards, ensure geospatial

control for climate and land use change, and gather data necessary for investigative studies related to

water, the environment, energy, and ecosystems. Vertical datum is fundamental to a variety of these

integrated earth sciences.

Old RTN Decommission Date

Access to the old RTN (referenced to NAD83(NSRS2007) will end on the evening of 8/19/2012. The old RTN servers will be decommissioned and access to the RTN will only be available through the new RTN (referenced to NAD83(2011). If you need access to the new RTN, contact Bart Alligood at bart.alligood@ncdenr.gov.

NAD83(2011) and Geoid12 announcement

NOAA's NGS has released the newly-completed National Adjustment of 2011 Project (NA2011), which adjusts approximately 80,000 National Spatial Reference System (NSRS) coordinates. The updated NAD83(2011) epoch 2010.00 coordinates are available on NGS Datasheets.

Geoid12 was released concurrently with NAD83(2011). The new Geoid12 grid files can be downloaded from the NGS Geoid page.

RTK Network Address Change

On Sunday, June 24^th, the NC RTK network underwent an address change. If your controller is connecting using the old IP address (207.4.64.22), it needs to be changed to 207.4.112.18 to access correction data. Subscribers using the DNS name rtn1.ncdenr.org will not need to make any changes.

This change will not affect any RTN users still using the older RTN system (207.4.252.87) until July 6, 2012 when older RTN system will be shut down permanently. If you have any questions, please email me, bart.alligood@ncdenr.gov, or call me at 919-707-9230.

New Benchmarks added!

Print Button Added to Database

RTN System Update #4

On April 14, 2012 at 6:00 p.m. EDT the old (NSRS2007) and new (2011) RTN servers will be unavailable for approximately three (3) hours. The old RTN servers are being moved to keep them operational until Geoid12 is available. RTN access will NOT CHANGE after the relocation. Please plan your work schedule accordingly since the RTN's will be unavailable for those hours.

The old RTN network (NAD83(NSRS2007)) will remain operational and accessible until the NAD83(2011) adjustment and GEOID12 are released. NCGS will post updates on this website.

Message for NC RTN users!

~~Access to the old RTN (referenced to NAD83(NSRS2007) will end on the evening of April 4, 2012.~~ If users have not received a new RTN access information email, contact Bart Alligood at bart.alligood@ncdenr.gov for further directions.

The new RTN system will be referenced to the most recent National Geodetic Survey (NGS) adjustment of NAD 83, NAD 83(2011) (http://www.ngs.noaa.gov/web/surveys/NA2011/NA2011_Project.shtml), which is aligned with the recently published multi-year CORS solution (www.ngs.noaa.gov/CORS/coord_info/myear_FAQ.shtml).

Although NGS has published the new multi-year CORS solution, they are still in the process of adjusting the passive marks to NAD 83(2011).

NGS is producing a new geoid (GEOID12) to be released in early 2012 to be used with NAD 83(2011). For more info on the new geoid, please read National Adjustment of 2011 (NA2011) FAQ #20 (http://www.ngs.noaa.gov/web/surveys/NA2011/NA2011_FAQ.shtml).

Until the new geoid is released, we recommend localizing to NAVD 88 bench marks when using NAD 83(2011) ellipsoid heights with the current geoid, GEOID09, because GEOID09 was developed to work with NAD 83(NSRS2007).
