River Basin Restoration Priorities 

Overview of RBRP MethodologyEEP develops River Basin Restoration Priorities (RBRPs) for each of the seventeen river basins by conducting a detailed screening for each eight-digit catalog unit (500-2000 square miles) within a river basin (1000-10,000 square miles).   RBRPs identify priority 14-digit hydologic unit (20-100 square mile) watersheds that exhibit a need for restoration and protection of wetlands, streams and riparian buffers. These Targeted Local Watersheds (TLWs) receive priority for EEP planning and restoration project funds. 

 

The restoration priorities EEP develops for each of the seventeen river basins in North Carolina are the result of a screening process which includes 1) a “desktop” analysis of Geographic Information System (GIS) data and aerial photographs; 2) review of  tables and reports detailing environmental problems and natural resource assets; 3) field reconnaissance of the watersheds in the river; and 4) outreach to interested and involved parties, especially professionals in local jurisdictions who may offer expertise and knowledge of existing initiatives, trends or future plans at a local level. Detailed information on the EEP's methodology for identifying TLWs is provided at EEP's RBRP Update page.
