Mercury

Mercury-containing products are used every day in North Carolina homes, schools and businesses. These products include fluorescent lamps and other lights containing mercury (LCMs), thermometers and thermostats and some of these products have an environmental benefit. For example, fluorescent lamps use less energy than traditional incandescent lamps. Unless they are recycled or otherwise disposed of properly, however, the mercury from these discarded products can contaminate the air, surface water and groundwater. Below you can find information on proper recycling, regulations, guidelines and other resources.

  • Fluorescent Lights and other lights containing mercury contain mercury vapor and should not be discarded with regular waste. Please see our Fluorescent Lights page for more information
  • For information on proper management of mercury thermostats please see our Thermostats page
  • Mercury-containing device (MCD) disposal is regulated by state and federal laws. For information on regulations affecting the disposal of MCDs please see our Disposal Facility Guidelines for Mercury-Containing Devices.
  • DEACS operates a grant program that assists local governments with developing programs to collect mercury-containing products from the public. Please see our Grant Programs for Local Governments page for more information on the Mercury Products Recycling Grant Program.
  • The Federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) offers information and resources on the EPA Mercury Website.
