Mercury-containing products are used every day in North Carolina homes, schools and businesses. These products include fluorescent lamps and other lights containing mercury (LCMs), thermometers and thermostats and some of these products have an environmental benefit. For example, fluorescent lamps use less energy than traditional incandescent lamps. Unless they are recycled or otherwise disposed of properly, however, the mercury from these discarded products can contaminate the air, surface water and groundwater. Below you can find information on proper recycling, regulations, guidelines and other resources.
For more information or assistance with managing mercury products, please contact the N.C. Division of Environmental Assistance and Outreach staff member Joseph Fitzpatrick, Environmental Specialist, 919-707-8121, or visit our Local Waste Reduction Programs and Contacts page to identify and contact solid waste management staff in your community. |
