At its September 2010 meeting, the CRC:
Denied a variance to John and Shirley Urbon of Brunswick County, who sought relief from the Commission’s oceanfront setback rule and static line exception rule to construct a new, larger single-family home in place of an existing home in Carolina Beach. Granted a variance to the Town of Sunset Beach, which sought relief from the Commission’s specific use standards for estuarine shorelines, which requires that dredging avoid primary nursery areas, in order to construct a boat ramp and public water access facility on the site of a DOT right-of-way to the Town’s old swing bridge. The Town will be required to remove and relocate shellfish currently in the construction area. Directed the Division of Coastal Management to resume enforcement measures for removal of sandbag structures that have exceeded time limits outlined in CRC rules, and are not covered with sand and vegetation. Approved for public hearing an amendment to NCAC 7H. 0304 to remove Mad River Inlet from the Inlet Hazard Area Area of Environmental Concern. Directed DCM staff to take proposed new Inlet Hazard Area boundaries and proposed development standards for IHAs to affected local communities for input and discussion. Approved the five-year Coastal Habitat Protection Plan update. Directed DCM staff to discuss the CRC’s draft sea level rise policy with coastal stakeholders.
