COASTAL HAZARDS SCIENCE PANEL TO DISCUSS TERMINAL GROINS AT JAN. 19 MEETING IN RALEIGH

RALEIGH – The state Science Panel on Coastal Hazards will meet Jan. 19 in Raleigh to discuss the N.C. Coastal Resources Commission’s study of the feasibility and advisability of the use of a terminal groin as an erosion control device in coastal North Carolina.

The panel, which provides scientific advice to the CRC, will meet at 10 a.m. in Room 1H120, 2728 Capitol Blvd., Raleigh. The meeting is open to the public.

The CRC has asked the science panel to serve as a peer review group for the study, which has been contracted to the engineering firm of Moffatt & Nichol.

During this meeting, the science panel will examine and provide comments on the preliminary analysis results from Moffatt & Nichol. A draft report is scheduled to be delivered to the CRC on Feb. 1.

The CRC, in consultation with N.C. Division of Coastal Management, the N.C. Division of Land Resources, and the N.C. Coastal Resources Advisory Council, is conducting the study on the use of a terminal groin as an erosion control device, as mandated by Session Law 2009-479.

Created by the CRC in 1997, the 13-member science panel is composed of coastal engineers and geologists.
