Masonboro Island friends group hosts annual fundraiser FOR Masonboro Island, a friends group that supports the Masonboro Island National Estuarine Research Reserve, held its second annual fundraiser Oct. 16, with more than 300 people attending the event at the Blockade Runner in Wrightsville Beach. Attendees enjoyed live music from local bands, participated in live and silent auctions, and learned about the stewardship and research activities taking place on the island from reserve staff. “It was an unbelievable night with great live music, delicious food and a rousing auction,” said Joanne Harcke, president of the non-profit organization, Friends of the Reserve for Masonboro Island. “We’re already planning for the third annual event for next year!” The event raised more than $13,500 for stewardship activities on the island, and some of the funds raised will be used to establish a trust for Masonboro Island. Friends of the Reserve, or FOR, is a non-profit organization that supports the North Carolina Coastal Reserve and National Estuarine Research Reserve. Formerly the Carolina Estuarine Research Foundation, or CERF, the mission, vision, and objectives of FOR remain the same. Through fundraisers, donations and memberships, FOR is able to provide funds for education, stewardship and research activities conducted on reserve sites. |
