Sandbag Stakeholder Workshop Feb. 23

RALEIGH – The N.C. Coastal Resources Commission will meet Feb. 23-24 at the NOAA/NCNERR Administration Building, 101 Pivers Island Road, in Beaufort. The meeting will begin at 3 p.m. on Feb. 23, and at 8:30 a.m. Feb. 24. The meeting is open to the public.

In addition to the regular meeting, the CRC will conduct a fourth sandbag stakeholder workshop at 10 a.m. Feb. 23 at the Pivers Island location. The CRC has invited several coastal N.C. stakeholders to participate in the workshop to continue a discussion of the current status of rules governing sandbag use on the state’s oceanfront, and to gather input on options for the future of the commission’s sandbag rules.

The following are some of the main items on the CRC’s agenda:

  • Offshore Energy – DCM staff will discuss the CRC’s offshore energy exploration recommendations, along with discussions on marine spatial planning and efforts to streamline offshore wind energy development.

  • Sea Level Rise – DCM staff will provide an update on development of the commission’s sea level rise policy statement. In addition, three speakers will address related climate change issues including marsh migration, climate change ecosystem assessment, and the Swan Quarter dike project.

  • Sandbag Stakeholders Meeting Summary – DCM staff will review comments and suggestions from four sandbag stakeholder meetings.

  • Land Use Plan Certifications – The CRC will consider four land use plan certifications.

  • Variances – Commissioners will hear two requests for a variance from the CRC’s rules.

  • Public Input and Comment – Members of the public may comment on any issue not on the current agenda at 11:45 a.m. Feb. 24.

A full meeting agenda is posted on the N.C. Division of Coastal Management’s website.

The Coastal Resources Advisory Council, a group that provides the CRC with local government perspectives and technical advice, will meet at 12:30 p.m., Feb. 23, at the NOAA/NCNERR Administration Building.
