Living Shoreline Training Site Visits

March 31, 2009

Site #1: Duke University Marine Laboratory - Site is location of a bulkhead removal/constructed sill/marsh planting project by Duke Lab/NC Coastal Federation in 2002. Adjacent to the sill site is a concrete bulkhead (fronting NOAA property) and a concrete bulkhead with rip-rap revetment apron.

Gene Slear lead a field discussion of potential erosion control options, with project history provided by T. Skrabal. Dr. Carolyn Currin (NOAA) and Dr. Bill Kirby-Smith (DUML) discussed monitoring efforts at the project site.

Site #2: NOAA boat basin shoreline: Marsh planting and oyster shell project.

Gene Slear lead the field discussion of potential erosion control options, with Dr. Carolyn Currin joining the group to provide project history and results of NOAA ’s monitoring efforts at the project site.

Site #3: Carteret Community College, Bogue Sound, Morehead City

Gene Slear lead a field discussion, with site history provided by Tracy Skrabal. Dr. David Eggleston with NCSU CMAST joined us at the site. This project site includes stone sills/plantings, oyster bag sills/plantings, oyster dome/plantings, and stone breakwaters/plantings. Discussion focused on types of approaches that could be used in this setting, and the potential considerations/ implications for each approach, and current permit requirements.

Site #4: River Rat kayak launch site, Newport River.

Gene Slear lead field discussion on riverine shorelines with minimal erosion. Group discussed potential erosion control options and considerations/implications of each option, and current permit requirements.

Site #5: Jones property-Bluewater Banks, Bogue Sound: Unprotected property, existing coastal marsh with eroding high bank. Adjacent property is bulkheaded.

Gene Slear lead field discussion, with site history provided by T. Skrabal. Discussion focused on types of approaches that could be used in this setting, and the potential considerations/implications for each approach, and current permit requirements.

Site #6: Kunkle Property- Bluewater Banks, Bogue Sound: Stone revetment/marsh planting project from 2001.

Gene Slear lead field discussion of potential erosion control options and considerations/implications of each option, and current permit requirements, with project history provided by T. Skrabal. Project is stabilized with stone revetment, and adjacent property is stabilized by vinyl bulkhead.

Site #7: Green property, Pine Knoll Shores, Bogue Sound: Stone sill/marsh planting project from 2002.

Gene Slear lead field discussion of potential erosion control options and considerations/implications of each option, and current permit requirements, with project history provided by T. Skrabal. Property adjacent to unstabilized marsh shoreline, and also adjacent to properties stabilized by bulkhead/revetment structures.

Site #8: Pine Knoll Shores site, artificial lagoon shorelines (Drive by stop/discussion)

Gene Slear lead field discussion- numerous properties along artificial lagoon protected by bulkhead properties.

Site #9: Crystal Coast County Club, Bogue Sound: No structures, marsh planting project from 199?

Gene Slear lead field discussion of potential erosion control options and considerations/implications of each option, and current permit requirements, with project history provided by Spencer Rogers. Site is location of marsh planting project led by Dr. Steve Broome (NCSU) and adjacent to golf course.
