This document reports the results of emergency air monitoring conducted in response to a wildfire, dubbed the Evans Road Fire, near Washington in eastern North Carolina during the summer of 2008. The monitoring was conducted from June 11 - August 4, 2008 at the behest of the Secretary of the NC Department of Environment and Natural Resources. The fire eventually burned over 40,000 acres, fueled not only by trees and other vegetation but also by a layer of peat and organic soil several feet thick. The smoldering fire produced dense smoke that impacted several eastern North Carolina counties, and took more than two months to fully suppress. Monitoring efforts focused primarily on measuring fine particulate matter concentrations using a network of instruments sited at six locations roughly encircling the fire. Screening for elemental mercury, carbon monoxide, and total volatile organic compounds (VOCs) generated by fire was also performed.
