What is TCR?
The Climate Registry (TCR) is a non-profit organization that encourages voluntary reporting of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and promotes early actions to increase energy efficiency and GHG emission reduction activities. TCR is governed by a Board of Directors, which includes U.S. and Mexican states, Canadian provinces and territories and Native Sovereign Nations. Its primary goals are to provide an accounting infrastructure that allows reporting of GHG emissions in a common, accurate, and transparent manner across industry sectors and support future GHG reduction efforts in North America.
What is a Reporter?
Members are organizations that demonstrate their environmental leadership by voluntarily committing to measure verify and publicly report their greenhouse gas emissions to The Registry utilizing TCR's General Reporting Protocol and on-line reporting tool. Members consist of corporate, non-profit, and government entities. Members agree to pay an annual fee, which is based on the organization's annual revenue (for commercial and industrial sectors) and budgets (for non-profit, government and academic groups).
What is a Verifier?
Annual GHG emissions data submitted to TCR must beverified by an independent, third party verification organization to ensure the Reporter's data is accurate and complete. This process lends credibility to the Registry's program and provides consistency to both Reporters and the public. The concept of verification is similar to the concept of a regular financial audit. Participating verification organizations must be ISO 14065 accredited. They must successfully complete ANSI's ISO 14065 accreditation process (and meet additional Registry-specific qualifications), and thus, become eligible to conduct verification activities for the Registry. Reporters must select and procure a verification organization to verify their data. Costs associated with this activity will depend on the complexity of the emissions inventory and the verification organization's fee.
