Wastewater Infrastructure Risk Analysis and Planning
Throughout the Albemarle-Pamlico region, coastal communities continue to grapple with the management of their wastewater treatment systems. In many cases some system components are decades past their planned life, and many rural communities have difficulty securing capital to maintain and improve these assets. This trend is compounded by increasing environmental pressures, including flooding, hurricanes, and sea level rise. Failing wastewater systems are not only an environmental concern; they are also an impediment to local economic development. In this project, APNEP secured federal and state resources to analyze wastewater treatment systems in Columbia and Manteo, North Carolina. Using EPA's CREAT software, the project team worked with town staff members to develop cost-effective recommendations to improve the resiliency of these systems. Recommendations are designed to be integrated into local budgets and capital improvement plans.
