Teacher InstituteEach summer since 2002, APNEP has supported a summer institute for teachers focused on estuarine and water quality education. Application materials are usually sent out in late winter and early spring, with the institute held during the summer months. To receive information about the institute, please join the APNEP mailing list. July 9-11, 2013 A FREE Professional Development Experience for North Carolina Teachers During this 3-day teacher institute, teachers will participate in an in-depth investigation of the diverse environmental science, health and civics issues related to water quality in NC. By using the interdisciplinary approach of environmental education, science teachers will learn how to address important water quality issues with their students both in the classroom and in outdoor environments. Participants will explore watersheds and aquatic ecosystems of the North Carolina piedmont, discover the effects of contaminated water sources on wildlife, ecosystems and human health, develop skills in watershed monitoring, learn about methods for addressing hazardous chemicals that threaten water quality, and interact with scientists researching cutting-edge water quality monitoring techniques and health effects of toxic contaminants. Hands-on, real world experiences will be emphasized--be prepared to get wet, learn a lot and be reenergized! The Institute is open to 8th -12th grade science teachers. Content and activities are aligned with the NC Science Essential Standards for:
