Strategic Habitat Areas
Strategic Habitat Areas (SHAs) represent priority habitat areas for protection in North Carolina. They represent areas of exceptional condition or areas that support key ecological functions for and coastal fish and shellfish species. Identification and designation of strategic habitat areas is an implementation action for the Coastal Habitat Protection Plan (CHPP).
The N.C. Division of Marine Fisheries is developing strategic habitat areas for waters, wetlands, and low-elevation uplands in the White Oak River basin and adjacent marine waters. APNEP has played a key role in this process by providing technical and scientific support for the analyses informing these designations.
