The Pasquotank River Basin
The Paquotank river basin is one of 6 major watersheds that drain into the Albemarle-Pamlico estuary. In partnership with the N.C. Office of Environmental Education, we provide here a copy of their Pasquotank river basin brochure (for a downloadable .pdf, click here). Teachers may order free copies of these booklets for classroom use. In addition to other programs and offerings for educators, APNEP has referenced relevant standards in the N.C. Standard Course of Study and the Virginia Standards of Learning here.
Like the Roanoke and Chowan river basins, the Pasquotank river basin extends between North Carolina and Virginia. While the materials below focus primarily on North Carolina, the Virginia portion of the basin contains many interesting features as well, including parts of the Great Dismal Swamp, Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge, and two canals that connect the Albemarle-Pamlico estuary with its brackish neighbor to the north, the Chesapeake Bay. See our maps page for an overview of this area.
