Overview

Members of APNEP’s Education and Engagement Action Team include representatives from universities, the NC Office of Environmental Education, NC Museum of Natural Sciences, NC Aquariums, NC State Parks, NC Sea Grant, local government, and conservation organizations including the NC Coastal Federation, Sound Rivers, and River Guardian Foundation. The team pursues collaborative initiatives aligned with the following APNEP Comprehensive Conservation and Management Plan (CCMP) actions:

  • D1.1: Communicate the importance of stewardship and offer opportunities for volunteerism to further APNEP's mission.
  • D2.1: Provide and promote opportunities for outdoor experiences that connect individuals with the Albemarle-Pamlico ecosystem. 
  • D2.2: Provide environmental education training opportunities for educators in the region.
  • D2.3: Increase public understanding of the relationship between ecosystem health and human health advisories relating to water, fish, and game.

Recent team accomplishments:

In 2015, the team solicited requests for mini-grant proposals and funded six projects in the APNEP region (read more about these projects in our Soundings post here): 

  1. Sea Wolves (CMAST Science House);
  2. Secrets of the Swamp Educator Trek (NC Museum of Natural Sciences);
  3. Seeds of Inspiration Family Literacy Project (Mano al Hermano and the NC Coastal Federation);
  4. We Are Nature Heroes (NC Aquarium-Roanoake Island);
  5. Cistern and Wildflower Meadow ((NC Aquarium-Roanoake Island); and
  6. Sound Choices in Environmental Education Conference (Environmental Educators of North Carolina).

Other recent APNEP sponsored environmental education and community engagement activities include River Basin Maps and Booklets for North Carolina and Virginia, Watershed and Water Quality Planning Workshops,  Project WET Facilitator Workshops, NC Catch Placemats, Coastal Discovery Camps, Living Shorelines Workshops and video, workshops on environmental effects on blue crab size led by Duke University Marine Lab, Shad in the Classroom, and the At Water's Edge Teacher Institute.  Past projects can be found here.
